What's going on...
Shawn Slivinski was the victim of a head injury and is recovering after months at various Columbus hospitals and physcial therapy institutions. Shawn lives a meager lifestyle by choice, is active in the community but is without health insurance. His extended stay in the hospital affects not only himself but everyone who knows him as a fellow gardener, barista, cook, local foods advocate, cyclist and friend.
THE ACCIDENT: Shawn was running a routine errand to the bank from his job as the manager of A Touch of Earth in the North Market. A car door was opened in front of him sending him off course, wrecking his primary mode of transportation and causing his head to strike the pavement (on one of the rare days when he was not wearing a helmet). He allowed an ambulance to take him to the hospital where his condition quickly deteriorated, he began to jumble his sentences and get tired.
HIS CONDITION: Shawn had two skull fractures (which were beneficial to the initial swelling), bleeding on four parts of his brain and bruising in two areas. Luckily the brain swelling did not increase and after four days doctors removed the brain monitor installed in his head. Due to respiratory issues he had to remain under sedation and on paralytic medication since his accident 4/22/12. His brain healed but because of complications his recovery is took longer as he has had to battle through pneumonia, respiratory problems, various infections, kidney dialysis, and more. Shawn woke up after over four weeks of sedation in the ICU was moved to two different hospitals for rehabilitation (the process of coming out of sedation and paralytic medication was long and doctors were unsure if Shawn would be responsive because of his brain trauma). After months of recovery he is walking, eating, able to fuction on his own. Other than being a bit frail, he is doing great with a personality that hasn't changed a bit which is more than a little miraculous. His journey to full recovery is not over yet. It is a slow process and we can help!

Shawn's Daily Updates
To see previous updates about Shawn's recovery, click on the tab for "Shawn's Condition"
(in the upper left hand corner above group photo)
*Update 10/10/12 (Joy): A special thanks to all of you who signed up to make Shawn a meal, your support is greatly appreciated and you are not forgotten!!! Shawn's schedule was a little unusual due to his out-patient physical therapy so the meals were put on hold for awhile. I am slowly organizing for a huge potluck, you will be emailed if you were added to the list to make Shawn a meal and if you would like to be added, email me at [email protected] . I know winter holidays of all sorts are coming up but maybe we can find a funky Saturday between the madness to come hang out for a low-key good time visiting with Shawn who has been doing great! Stay tuned!

Shawn's Community Garden
Liz Updates:
(From comments above): Sorry I haven't posted about the garden--many excuses. It is doing very well. We delivered lettuce to the food pantry at the Community Resources Center last week (first harvest). Bruce, Jeanne, Pedro, and Lori looked after it while Mike and I were out of town. Basically that means watering things when they get dry. If anyone has a chance to stop by and check on it in the next weeks, that would be very helpful. There is a rain barrel in the bush at the corner of the church, but right now it is empty. We've been taking the water jugs to our house and filling them there. I did a good weeding last week, as well as plenty a few new things. If anyone wants information, you can contact me at [email protected].
Community Garden Party was a great success!!!
Thanks to everyone who came out and helped (even folks you don't see in this video) Keep a lookout, Liz is going to create a calendar for upkeep. The work continues but the tilling and planting we did was a tremendous start, thank you thank you thank you!!!

(Email from Liz)...
First and foremost, a big thank you and hugs and kisses for helping plant Shawn's garden. Mike and I have been going over there and watering every few days and things look great.
Second, we are going to need some help keeping up with it! There are several weeks when we are not around to do any caretaking at all (June 3-10, June 19-July 5).
We need help with: watering (every few days unless there is rain); weeding/hoeing (about once a week); picking produce; adding more plants since there is still room. For watering, there is a rain barrel and jugs in the bushes, but right now the rain barrel is empty since we have had no rain. Mike's been getting the jugs and filling them up at our house for the time being. For picking produce, until Shawn is back home, picker gets a share and whatever is left goes to Community Resources Center on E. Lakeview Ave. Anyone out there willing to take a turn? Know anyone else who might lend a hand?
I'll put together a calendar, if it is needed, and send it to everyone.
Regards,
Liz Harzoff

Past Events
Sept 11th, 2012 at Betty's: 10% of the day's food sales from 11am-2am went to Shawn!
Thank you Betty's for the amazing success of Shawn's Fundraiser. We stopped by for dinner with Shawn who is still recovering and it was great to see his face on every table and the support of the restaurant. You rock!
Betty's (680 North High Street Columbus, OH 43215), http://bettyscolumbus.com/
Here is an email from Betty's Restaurant Group/The Columbus Food League's Charitable Giving team:
The Columbus Food League (CFL) is a family of five local, independent restaurants. Every month, each of our restaurants partners with a Community Partner for a full day of food, fun, and fundraising — donating 10% of that day's food sales to our partner’s cause. These partners are selected by our Charitable Giving Advisory Team, a trusted group Columbus Food League management members, staff, and customers.
We are very happy to tell you that the staff of Betty's have chosen you as their Community Partner for September. Currently, Betty's hosts their Community Partner Day (CP Day) on the second Tuesday of each month. Therefore your CP Day will be scheduled on Tuesday September 11. To reiterate, we will dedicate 10% of the food sales from 11 am until 2 am to you. Community Partners have been most successful who have promoted the event to their members and contacts. CFL will tweet about your Community Partner Day as well as post material at the location ahead of time. Steve Heighton, Betty's General Manager, will be in contact with you about 2 weeks prior to September 11 to coordinate and finalize details of the event.

Ride of Silence Columbus 2012
The event went very well, but I missed the opening remarks when Shawn was mentioned, hopefully I will find coverage of that somewhere. Thanks to Shawn from Staufs for representing Shawn on his bike. Thank you Michael for letting me know about the Ride of Silence, I can't believe I missed you at the back of the pack! Thanks to Ian and Ben for helping hand out fliers. (The guy who accidentally opened his car door in front of Shawn stayed and filed the police report, just wanted folks to know.)
-Joy
(Michael's email): I wanted to make you aware of an event downtown called the annual Ride of Silence, held each year to honor cyclists who have been injured or killed in accidents on the road and to promote bicycle safety. You can read about it here: http://www.considerbiking.org/ride-of-silence-2012/ (*Or click button below) This ride will have hundreds of cyclists and will get a lot of attention. It could be a great opportunity to have Shawn’s story mentioned in the opening remarks, or an opportunity to hand out fliers with his website information and story on it. -Michael Essman
